I was driving my car a couple of weeks ago; I was on way home from work. What was unusual
about this drive was that it was 11:00am. I work in downtown Boston and my building had just been
evacuated. This day was a perfect late summer day, cloudless blue sky and a warm ocean breeze. This
Daily Drive will be forever crystallized in my memory. It was Tuesday, September 11th
The traffic down I-95 was heavy, yet I was preoccupied. As I glanced at operators of passing vehicles, I
could easily recognize those who heard the news. They had the same 1000-yard stare I did. As the
mornings' events strained to be audible through my single 8" dash speaker, I was not propelled down the
Interstate by fear or a sense of urgency. I just had a need to drive home.
My thirst for information went unquenched as the repetitive reports from my Chrysler Solid State AM
radio, only confirmed one fact;
America was under attack.
Once I pulled into Heavenly Acres (our semi-sarcastic moniker for the apartment complex where we reside),
I hugged me wife, turned on CNN and called Mike, my best friend and co-creator of My Daily Driver.com.
The anger within me grew to the point of bile raising into my esophagus. I needed to wash it down with a
Domestic beer. With my wife Patty and our good friend Scott we headed to a local watering hole where I
knew we could commiserate with other Americans. This was not a time to be reclusive.
With 5 televisions, normally allocated for all things sports tuned into every news station available
under the cable umbrella, broadcasting the horrific images from New York City and Washington, the mood
understandably turned hostile. We all agreed that we, as Americans, wanted blood. Smoking crators,
baby. Carpet bomb the whole offending nation into a parking lot and then charge a fee to park. The
entire bar almost enlisted. Damn "them". How dare "they".
Well, once I sobered up and really looked at "who" attacked us and why it changed my mind about parking a
Trident Sub in the Arabian Sea and lobbing 100 fully loaded ICBM's at "them". America was Attacked by an
Ideology not a country with borders. Of course, there are "renegade" countries that harbor these
fanatical terrorists and perhaps promote their causes. However, as a people, when you are poor, hungry
and uneducated it is historically easy to have a fanatical leader place the blame of your fate on someone
else. We have seen this within our own borders.
Do I want justice? Damn right I do. There is a huge bill that someone is going to pay and pay they
will.
Launching an attack upon any country that doesn't even have paved roads with the most technologically
advanced weapons of war will not solve this threat to America. Do I agree with the bombings? Damn
straight I do. Will it be a short-term fix? Yes.
Are we the world's most powerful country, both economically and militarily? Yes. Bar none. Once the
murderers are erraticated, we can change this anti-American sentiment with food, education and the
opportunity to better ones self. This is everything that America stands for.
