Jon Drives this Mighty 1967 440 Dodge Dart and here is his story.
I obtained the car in March of 2000 from a friend of mine. He had it 2 weeks and didn't like it
(because he can't shift). It then was a 383 4 speed with 3:91 gears. When I took possession of it
I found the left spring support was rotted. I had to have that repaired. I drove it through the
summer of 2000 and to my disappointment, the car was lacking HP.
I took it off of the road to do my 'transplant.' It took 6 months to complete the task. The upgraded
motor, a 1972 HP-440 was obtained from a 1969 Dart that was a 1/4 mile car, not streetable.
The car was a consistent 11.5 car with the 440 in it. I rebuilt the engine and increased the
compression and improved head flow. The upgrades included. 040 over, 11.5:1 Keith Black pistons,
porting and polished heads with single groove stainless steel valves w/3 angle valve job, full
groove main bearings, dual valve springs, 555 lift hydraulic cam w/292 true duration, true roller
timing chain, Mopar Performance hi-pressure oil pump and 10 qt. oil pan. Sitting on top feeding
the motor is an Edelbrock TM 7 intake with a 950cfm Holley Avenger Carb. Hooker Super Competition,
3 1/2 "fenderwell headers remove the spent fuel into a pair of Dynomax 3" Race Series Mufflers to
quiet the ride and improve maximum flow. The transmission is a race built 727 w/3800 Stall torque
converter. It has a full reverse pattern manual valve body with a B & M Quicksilver shifter and all
of the tricks done to the transmission that can be done. At the rear are 4:56 gears to propel my
baby to victory! The interior and body are kept close to original as possible. The steering wheel
is a 69 Dart GT woodgrain wheel attached to a manual steering box and column. A radio/heater delete
plate dresses up the dash. I removed the visors for the reason that when you launch off the line,
the visors tend to come back into your face!
At the rear of the car is an emergency shut off that runs through the tail light. In the trunk is
the enclosed battery and its related wiring to switches inside the car. The body has a 2000 dodge
neon bronze paint that is maintained by Arlington Auto Body of Cranston, RI. I got the car already
painted and had to have some minor repairs done to a rear quarter panel because someone leaned up
against it and put an ass print in it. I also had the engine compartment painted while the engine
was out last year. Fiberglass front bumper and hinged hood lighten the car.
Stopping power is a 73 Dart Manual Disc brake setup with 11" x 2 1/2" rear drum brakes from a B-Body
car. With over 500 HP, you need this to stop!
I did all of the work myself except for the above mentioned and Simplex Engine Rebuilding of
Providence, RI who did the machine work on the engine. Yes, I built my transmission, too. I am a
mechanic of 32 years.
I drive this car but with limitations. In steady or heavy rain, the slicks pose a handling problem
but a little rain doesn't stop me and also the Heater; I don't have one so I can't drive it on good
cold winter days. But I may be tempted on a somewhat mild winter day. I built my car to drive, race,
and show! A trailer queen it is not, but it is
